HUMBLE BEGINNINGs: The Beauty of Starting Over in Your Next Chapter

Sometimes, when a transition happens, we don’t immediately recognize that we are standing at the beginning of something new. There is often a quiet space between what was and what is becoming; a moment when the familiar has shifted, but the next chapter has not yet fully revealed itself.

On our walk today, we noticed acorns scattered across the earth, already beginning to blanket the ground as the season prepares to change. Each tiny acorn seemed like a gentle reminder that nature is always preparing for what comes next.

An acorn is an example of a humble beginning. So small that we can easily overlook it, yet within that tiny nut is the potential to become something extraordinary, a mighty oak tree. It doesn’t happen quickly. It doesn’t happen all at once. It simply begins. And perhaps that is the message.

You don’t have to know exactly what you are becoming to begin.

The acorn reminds us of potential and growth. Great things can begin in the smallest and most unassuming places. What looks insignificant today may hold the foundation for something much greater tomorrow. An oak doesn’t become mighty without weathering storms, changing seasons, and standing firmly rooted through uncertainty. Sometimes our own strength is being developed in ways we cannot yet see.

We live in a world that often asks us to know the outcome before we’ve even taken the first step. Nature doesn’t work that way. The oak takes time. Growth takes time. Becoming takes time.

The acorn also carries a message of abundance and possibility. Across cultures, acorns have long been associated with prosperity, protection, fertility, and good fortune. There is something beautiful about the idea that what appears to be a simple seed, can carry so much possibility within it.

For those of us who have just dropped our children at college, a new beginning might look very different than we imagined. The house suddenly feels a little quieter. The rooms that were once filled with backpacks, conversations, schedules, and the beautiful chaos of raising children, now have a little more space. And in that space, something else will begin to emerge.

Perhaps there are parts of ourselves that have been quietly waiting for our attention. Dreams we placed on the shelf. Interests we didn’t have time to explore. Questions we couldn’t hear above the noise of everyday life. Maybe this new space isn’t empty at all. It can be an invitation to listen inward, to rediscover, or even to ask, What might be ready to grow in me now?

Just like the acorn, we don’t have to have the entire oak tree figured out. We only need to honor the beginning. So as the seasons change and the acorns begin to fall, perhaps we can pause long enough to notice what nature is reminding us:

  • Every ending carries the possibility of a beginning.
  • Every quiet space can hold potential.
  • And sometimes, the most extraordinary growth begins in the most humble places.

Maybe your next chapter is already beneath your feet. You just have to notice it.
