Message from the Bald Eagle: Discernment, Decisiveness & the Courage to Dive In

Warning: This might be a little tough love.

We recently watched a bald eagle dive into the water for a fish and there was something mesmerizing about it. We caught it right at the exact moment it dove. The eagle was high above the water and made the decisive action to move at the right moment. Without hesitation, it dove. There was no second-guessing. It saw what it needed, made the decision, and moved.

There is a message in that for us.

Discernment Before the Dive

Discernment doesn’t mean endlessly analyzing every possibility. It means becoming still enough to recognize what is truly calling for our attention. The eagle doesn’t chase every fish. It watches and observes, then determines what is worth pursuing. There is wisdom in that, especially when life feels busy and our attention is being pulled in a dozen different directions.

Sometimes we need to step back from the chaos and ask:

What actually matters right now?

What deserves my energy?

What am I being called toward?

What am I simply reacting to?

And perhaps most importantly:

What am I allowing to distract me from the thing I already know matters?

The False Sense of Urgency

This is where the tough love comes in. Many times distraction disguises itself as urgency. We convince ourselves that everything needs our attention right now. Another email, task, problem to solve, thing to organize. We stay busy because being busy can feel productive. However, busy isn’t always purposeful. A false sense of urgency can become a subtle form of self-sabotage. When we’re constantly responding to what feels urgent, we may never make space for what is actually important.

The eagle doesn’t do that. It doesn’t dive because the water is demanding its attention. It dives because it has discerned what it wants.

Remove the Hesitation

Once the eagle sees its opportunity, something changes. The watching stops. The decision has been made and it dives.

How often do we recognize our own opportunity but remain suspended in the space between knowing and doing?

We know the conversation needs to happen. We know the idea keeps returning for a reason. And yet we hesitate. We tell ourselves we’ll do it when things settle down. When the timing is better, or when we have more information. When we feel more confident.

The continued waiting isn’t discernment anymore. It’s hesitation. There is a difference. Discernment helps us become clear. Hesitation can keep us stuck.

You Don’t Need a New Calendar To Reset

Maybe this is why the eagle’s dive feels especially meaningful when we’re entering a new season or establishing a new routine. We often think we need a particular date to begin again.

I’ll start on Monday. The first of the month. The beginning of a new season. January 1st.

You can reset at any moment. You don’t need the calendar to give you permission. You can decide today that something deserves your attention.

Make the decision you’ve been putting off. Remove one distraction and take one step.

Dive Toward What Matters

The eagle doesn’t know everything about what will happen beneath the surface. It simply knows enough.

Enough to recognize the opportunity, trust its instincts, and act.

What would it feel like to give ourselves permission to do the same? We don’t need to know every detail of the path ahead. We just need to become discerning about what matters. Remove the distractions that keep us from it, and then have the courage to move.

The question this eagle leaves us with is:

Where are you hesitating?

Where have you been creating a false sense of urgency around things that don’t truly matter?

Where might you be distracting yourself from the decision, goal, or opportunity that is quietly asking for your attention?

And what would happen if you stopped circling…and simply dove?

The next step is not always about doing more. It’s about seeing clearly, deciding intentionally, and moving without hesitation. The opportunity may already be there. It’s simply time to trust yourself enough to dive.
