There was something captivating about its presence, as though it had been standing there quietly for generations, witnessing the comings and goings of life without feeling the need to intervene.

We learned that, in folklore, people would whisper their wishes, worries, and concerns into the branches of willow trees, allowing the wind to carry them away. We loved the symbolism of this practice, particularly the idea of releasing what we no longer need to carry. But as we stood beneath this magnificent tree, another thought began to take shape: What if some of the things we need to release aren’t necessarily our worries, but the voices we’ve allowed to become louder than our own?

Think about how much of what we believe about ourselves comes from external influences. When we’re young, we look to our parents to understand the world and learn what is expected of us. Our teachers shape how we see our abilities, our mentors influence our decisions, and society offers an endless supply of opinions about who we should be, what success looks like, and how we ought to live. Much of this guidance comes from people who genuinely want the best for us, and there is certainly wisdom to be found in learning from others. But somewhere along the way, we can become so accustomed to looking outward for direction that we lose touch with the quiet knowing that lives within us.

The willow offers an interesting perspective on this. Known for its remarkable flexibility, it bends with the wind rather than resisting every movement that comes its way. Its strength isn’t found in rigidly holding its shape, but in its ability to move with changing conditions while remaining deeply rooted. Perhaps there is a lesson here about how we navigate our own lives. We can remain open to new ideas, listen to the experiences of others, and allow ourselves to be influenced without surrendering the truth of who we are. Being adaptable doesn’t mean abandoning ourselves to fit the expectations of others.

The weeping willow is also associated with emotional healing, intuition, and the release of old sadness. Its connection to water reminds us of the deeper emotional world beneath the surface, the place where our instincts, feelings, and unspoken truths often reside. When we become overwhelmed by external noise, those inner signals can be difficult to hear. We might find ourselves making decisions based on what seems sensible to everyone else, rather than what feels genuinely right for us. We may even convince ourselves that we want something simply because we’ve been told it’s what we should want.

The invitation from the willow is to spend a little less time collecting answers from the outside world and a little more time listening within. Not every piece of advice needs to become our truth, not every expectation deserves our agreement, and not every path that looks right to someone else is necessarily ours to follow. Sometimes the most meaningful work we can do is untangle what we’ve inherited, absorbed, and accepted from what we genuinely feel, believe, and know to be true.

As we continued our walk, we thought about those wishes and worries once whispered into willow branches. Maybe we could use that same practice to let go of the expectations, old stories, and borrowed beliefs that no longer serve our authentic being. We don’t have to reject everything we’ve learned or shut out the wisdom of others; we simply need to remember that their voices are not meant to replace our own.

The message from the Willow: Be willing to bend, release what weighs you down, and stay rooted in who you truly are. You can listen to the world without letting it define you. Your authentic being isn’t something you need to discover in someone else’s words or approval. It is something you reconnect with when you become quiet enough to hear yourself.

Perhaps the next time you find yourself looking for an answer, the question isn’t who should I ask, but when was the last time I truly listened to myself?

A little reflection for your journey and deeper opportunity for reflection in The Stillness Project, Guidepost #7: DISMANTLING:

What beliefs, expectations, or definitions of success have you adopted from others without questioning whether they truly belong to you?
