As we move into autumn and begin settling into a new rhythm, the sea turtle offers us a beautiful message about emotional resilience and remembering that we were never meant to carry everything alone.
There is something quietly powerful about the sea turtle. It moves through the ocean with patience, carrying its home on its back. Its shell offers protection, shelter, and a place to retreat when the world around it becomes too much.
When the Season Changes
Summer brings with it a feeling that you can breathe slowly, while Autumn often brings a shift to faster pace energy. The calendar changes. School begins, schedules fill, responsibilities return, and the pace of life can begin to quicken. For some caregivers, this transition can feel especially heavy. There may be children who need support, aging parents who need care, partners who depend on us, or loved ones whose needs seem constant. There are appointments to remember, meals to prepare, decisions to make, and countless little things that are ours to carry. It can feel as though the weight of the world is sitting on our shoulders. Much like the sea turtle carries its home on its back.
You Are Allowed to Feel the Weight
We sometimes think of resilience as being strong enough to handle whatever life places in front of us. But resilience doesn’t mean you’ll never feel overwhelmed. We allow ourselves to acknowledge what we are feeling without believing that those feelings define us. Some days may bring patience. Other days may bring frustration. Life is full of sadness, exhaustion, uncertainty, gratitude, joy, or even guilt, all existing together in ways that don’t always make sense. These emotions don’t mean we are doing something wrong. They are part of navigating life. We don’t have to compare our emotional journey to anyone else’s. We don’t know what another person is carrying beneath the surface, just as they don’t know what we carry beneath ours. The same goes for the struggles we may see our little ones, or other loved ones we care for go through.
Your path is your own. There is no perfect way to move through a difficult season. There is only your unique way.
There Is Wisdom in Moving Slowly
The sea turtle doesn’t rush. It moves with the rhythm of the water. Following the sea’s turtle’s wisdom, when life becomes overwhelming and our instinct might be to move faster, to get more done, solve the next problem, take care of one more person, instead, slow down. Take a breath. Notice what is happening inside of you. Ask yourself what truly needs your attention right now and what can wait.
Not everything has to be solved today. Not every emotion needs to be pushed away. And not every responsibility needs to be carried at the same moment. Sometimes moving forward means taking one small step instead of trying to see the entire path ahead.
Your Shell Is a Place to Return To
The sea turtle’s shell is more than protection. It is home. For us, our own “shell” might look very different. It might be a quiet cup of coffee before everyone else wakes up. A walk outside. Sitting near the water. Journaling. Listening to music. Taking a few moments alone. Talking with someone we trust. It might simply be giving ourselves permission to stop for a moment. These moments aren’t selfish. They are ways of returning to ourselves. Because when we spend so much of our time caring for others, it can be easy to forget that we need care, too. Emotional resilience doesn’t mean constantly giving from an empty place. It means learning when we need to return home to ourselves.
You Don’t Have to Carry It Alone
One of the most important messages the sea turtle brings is although it carries its home with it, the sea turtle does not travel the ocean alone. Neither should we. Caregiving can sometimes become an incredibly isolating experience. You may be surrounded by people and still feel as though no one truly understands what your days feel like. This may be the season to find your people. A caregiver support group. A community gathering. A trusted friend. A family member. A therapist. Someone who has walked a similar road.
Sometimes we don’t need someone to fix the situation. We simply need someone who understands. Someone who can say, I know and reminds us that the difficult emotions, the exhaustion, uncertainty, and even the moments when we wonder if we can keep going are not ours alone. Asking for support isn’t a sign that you aren’t strong enough to carry your journey. It may be one of the strongest things you can do.
Your Journey Doesn’t Have to Look Like Anyone Else’s
There will always be people who seem to be managing life more easily. Someone may appear more organized, or have more patience, or may seem to balance caregiving, work, family, and their own needs effortlessly. But we never see the whole story. Every person is navigating a different landscape. Different responsibilities, relationships, histories. So perhaps this season isn’t about asking, How am I doing compared to everyone else? The better question is: What do I need to navigate my life today? That answer may change from one day to the next. And that’s okay.
Carry What Is Yours. Release What Isn’t.
The sea turtle doesn’t try to become a dolphin. It doesn’t rush because another creature moves faster. It simply moves as it was designed to move. There is a quiet lesson in that for all of us. We don’t have to become someone else’s version of strong. We don’t have to carry everything perfectly. We don’t have to pretend that difficult days aren’t difficult. We can acknowledge the weight. We can rest. We can ask for help. We can find connection. We can protect our energy. And we can keep moving forward in our own time. As autumn begins to settle around us, perhaps the sea turtle’s message is simply this:
Be gentle with what you are carrying. You are allowed to feel the weight. You are allowed to move slowly. You are allowed to return to your own inner place of safety. And you are allowed to reach out and find others who can walk beside you. Because emotional resilience isn’t about carrying the world on your back without ever bending. It is about knowing yourself well enough to recognize when the journey feels heavy and having the courage to care for yourself along the way.
Carry your home within you. Move at your own pace. And don’t be afraid to find your people along the way. That, too, is resilience.
